Can I delete all emails prior to a certain date

There is no setting or a shortcut on your iPhone (Mail app) that will help you sort your emails for deletion chronologically. You will need to delete those emails manually by locating and selecting them.

It will definitely be faster if your husband logs on this email account on a computer on the email account's website. This way he will have more options to delete them there and faster.
