iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

Another weird thing happening

I had this steady drain again. Not quite as drastic but still suspicious. Normally in airplane mode the iPhone would drain around 5 percent but it was around 15ish today again. The point marked by the arrow indicates what I did at that exact time. Which was setting Mail accounts to ‘manual’. Not just on the bottom at the fetch schedule but also for each and every individual account.

I haven't followed the discussion in a while but wanted to give you guys an update. I had the battery drain issue with my 12 Pro since day one especially in dual sim mode. Have tried everything and by battery drain I refer to abnormal drain in idle. Around 6% per hour.

Now I bought an iPhone 12 Pro Max last week and the problem is gone. Even in dual SIM mode the battery is perfect. Idle use around 0.5% per hour. Exact same SIM setup and settings.

Below you see the idle drain at night with cellular on and both lines active. Of course during the day I'm using my phone but battery performance is great!

This leads me to the conclusion that it's not a firmware but a hardware problem with the modem. Unless they use different firmware between 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max which I doubt.

Well there is one difference, which should not make a different but I just want to mention. The 12 Pro was the US model A2341 and the 12 Pro Max is the EU model A2411.

Today I did some testing with idle battery consumption on iOS 14.4 (iPhone 12 mini), which I installed yesterday. I had noticeable drainage on iOS 14.3 since I purchased the product and disabled the mobile connection via airplane mode most of the time as a temporary solution. Now I can't really tell the difference between enabling and disabling airplane mode.

9:00 to 11:00: Airplane mode on, WiFi on, Bluetooth on

11:00 to 13:00: Airplane mode off, WiFi on, Bluetooth on

13:00 to 15:00: Airplane mode on, WiFi on, Bluetooth on

15:00 to 17:00: Airplane mode off, WiFi on, Bluetooth on

Hi guys. I am an owner of 12 max pro since 17/01 (12 days now) and I have to say that I am not that impressed with the battery. From a lot of comments and reviews I was expecting a real beast in terms of battery performance but unfortunately that is not the case. While I do not experience this huge battery drain overnight (like 12pro`s) it still loses 2-3% for 6.5 hours overnight and the first hour after getting up with a just a little bit of a scrolling in facebook etc it loses like 1% in 10 minutes. I am working from home so it is constantly on wi-fi, i imagine what will happen outside on LTE (we still do not have 5G in my country).

I wonder why an entirely new phone loses even 1% on a total standby when it is not used at all? For instance my 3,5year old 8+ without using can take up to 24 hours on idle to get 1% down.

I know that here are people with worse battery problems but how is this even possible, 3,5y old phone against 10 days old which is presented to be with a monstrous battery. And everytime I scroll a bit and take a look at the battery % it is down 1%. I thought this should last 2 full days with a loooooot of tasking on it ( mostly on 4G, not wifi). I do not play games, just youtube, spotify , facebook, messanger and viber thats all.

I can see that there are people who get 0% decrease while on idle( no matter time frame). Interesting.

Now, a few days after installing 14.4 public release, the situation seems to have improved somewhat on my 12 Pro. I now went from 100% to 90% between midnight and 8am, with zero activity. While happy for the improved situation (it used to be 65% overnight) I am still wondering where that 10% went. My old iPhone X in the same period and with very similar settings only spent about 2%.

The little activity shown overnight is registered as Home & Lock Screen. I don't understand that since I never touched the phone and I see no traces of anything that could have "woken up" the phone, e.g. notifications, automation etc.

iPhone 12 Mini:

On the day Apple released 14.4 I was about to return the device including the Apple Watch and switch to Android after 8 years of iPhones. I had 20-25% overnight drain with 14.3, now it‘s down to 6% with 14.4. Still don‘t know where the 6% come from, but I can live with that. More importantly, I get about 7.5 hrs screen on time at home/via wifi (2 hrs Youtube App, 1 hr Safari browsing, 1.5 hr call via carrier, 1 hour amazon app, 1 hr messaging and mail, plus other stuff), and still have about 20% battery life left. Apple Watch was paired for about 10 hours, Airpods for 3 hours. That‘s rather ok or would you expect other results?

Since i have been using 14.4 RC i have been telling that was better, the lost of percentage during the night was about 4% to 6% , it was an improvement, but not a fix.

So, today i wake up to this, same settings has always, and a 30% loss during the night.

This is not acceptable, by far the worst iphone i have ever had, so inconsistent.

SHAME..
