iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

Experiencing the exact same "issue" with my iPhone 12 pro (128GB).

I compared it with my girlfriend her iPhone XR (64 gb) last night. Her phone started of with 64% remaining where mine was at 94%. Both phone were left idle over a time of 8.5 hours. The next morning the iPhone 12 pro drained two 84% while the XR was at 63%.

Both phones had almost no background activity and are connected to wifi (5ghz).

The only difference between them is that the iPhone 12 pro has dual sim set up and the XR only uses one (physical) sim.

But that shouldn't drain your battery that much, should it?

I have the same problem as the rest of you. I have been in contact with Apple like 10 times. They have replaced the battery and i have tried a lot of silly suggestions like removing apps like facebook and Instagram, restart it, restart it with iTunes. I have change sim-card and tried with a new Apple id. Nothing works.

Today they told me that it was nothing wrong with my phone and there was nothing more they could do. It is obvius a problem and they just protend that it is not.

This is a comparation between my phone and a 3 year old iPhone 8.

Hi Community,

I got a brand new iPhone 12 (5 days old) and want to ask if my battery drain is normal? After a very long time with Android I'm new to the apple universe so I hope to hear opinions of ppl who have more experience than me:

After a day on work my battery shows about 60 - 68 % and imo I didn't used it too often, just safari and settings mostly, is this normal? It seems my old smartphone had more endurance (Huawei P30 Pro).

I literally did everything (black mode, settings etc.) to have a long battery life and because of this I'm unsure if this is normal.

After about a month with my iPhone 12 Pro Max I one day realized I was having to charge it twice in the same day. I went to settings--> battery and reviewed the activity and the app "microsoft translate" had been running in the background for days and rapidly draining the battery. I had only used the app once for about 15 seconds a few days prior. Once I deleted the app I'm back to a normal shelf life for the battery, only having to recharge once a day.

Thank you so much for the response! The phone losing 20-25% charge overnight sitting idle on the desk is terrible.

For my case, looks like the battery charts checks out. It had been flat throughout the night. It’s been just 3 days and using an iPhone for the first time, its a bit confusing reading those charts under battery. I’m getting used to them slowly. Thanks a lot!

So, yesterday I finally decided to configure my eSIM on my iPhone 12 and observe the idle drain overnight. Using 2 phones wasn’t working out for me.

Having this phone for 4 days now, somedays I woke up in the morning with 4%, 5% and 14% drain overnight as well. I couldn’t isolate the cause for 14% drain outlier though, I kept WiFi on, and maybe sub-par cellular reception that night. I usually turn off the background app refresh as well. This was with single SIM.

Coming to this experiment, I saw 5% drain overnight, from 10:30 at night until 7:30 in the morning. The settings were similar except the WiFi was turned off this time around. As for cellular reception, I had 2/4 bars on both the SIMs, with the secondary SIM occasionally latching on to 3/4 bars. The battery charts are pretty much flat throughout the night with no apps consuming power listed below.

Should I be satisfied with this drain with 2 SIMs configured? It’s my first iPhone and what I had gathered online, the standby optimisation in iOS is exceptional with 1-2% drain overnight, for most users.

This is something I started to see this morning. The messages app consuming battery in the background. I’m not sure what might be the reason behind this. Every time I use my phone, its right there sipping battery.

I’m not even using the messages app, barring a few OTPs that I get as SMS. Can someone please point out to a reason and a possible fix for this?

No it doesn't for me ...

Indeed it seems to have been solved temporarily for me with iOS 14.4 but the issue is back since 14.5 or 14.5.1 ... And 14.6 doesn't solved anything.

Here is some screencapture from my iPhone 12 Pro Max and with girlfriend iPhone 11 Pro Max, both are now in 14.6 and were this morning in 14.5.1. Her iPhone is my previous one so the battery is already "used" ...

The captures with white background are mine and the ones with black background are her.

I think the picture speak by themselves, I almost don't use it and it depletes (with an almost constant slope) faster than her while she uses it :'(

At 2:30pm:

At 6pm

The only time when it doesn't abnormally deplete is during the night, with do not disturb and night mode activated (not the airplane mode).

The warranty on the phone just exists for namesake. Apple support doesn’t value their customers anymore. They tell me losing 25-30% for a 1.5 hours call is normal. I have been using iphone right from the 2g and have never see this much battery get consumed during talktime. With previous iphones i have seen that talk time consumes the least battery but this is iphone is no where close to that. The 12 pro heats up too very easily and while using the lidar scanner it heats which maybe normal because of the mechanism but using the camera shouldn’t cause so much of a drain.

My experience: during the first months my iPhone 12 pro was good for at least 2 full days without recharging. Now it is good for one day most of the time, but it has been worse for a while! And that's almost hilarious, when you look at the three screen dumps I did put together. The battery usage display shows heavy usage by the Flashlight, but the iPhone was sitting on my desk, no calls nothing … and no flashlight shining all time!
