iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

After a couple days of experimenting.

Let me give you scenarios/examples with no regard to any other settings other than those mentioned being turned on or off.

iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 14.3

SIM card installed, WiFi on, Cellular On, Bluetooth in Standby (Turned off in CC to disable new connections, but still enabled)

Battery drops between 15 and 30% over an eight hour time frame while not being in use. (This was the case for a couple days, until I realized something was clearly wrong)

SIM card installed, WiFi off, Cellular off, Bluetooth standby same as before

Battery drops around 10% over the same time frame (Better, but still not satisfying)

Now get this!

SIM card taken out, Wifi on, Cellular off, Bluetooth same as before, I also turned Airplane Mode on for the sake of it

Draining between 1 and 3% , over the span of 8 hours.

I know, it seems absolutely silly to use an iPhone without a SIM card, but as long as this bug is not fixed taking out the Sim card might be your best option to prevent your battery from draining over night. Or you just simply keep it on a charger. Keeping the SIM and at least turning off WiFi and cellular or putting the device into airplane mode should make the battery drain a little less too.

Some other things you might want to switch off, if only to test for a couple days to see if battery life improves and slows the drain. Keep in mind, you can disable everything temporarily and don't have to worry about anything breaking. If something needs a certain thing enabled, iOS will most likely give you a prompt anyways. You can go back and enable everything again, but until a version of iOS 14.3.x or 14.4 is released that addresses the those kind of issues, it's the best and to be frank, the only thing you can do.

  • Location Services > System Services. Be bold and turn off EVERYTHING. Toggle the status bar icon (the switch on the very bottom) so when you slowly enable them one by one again, you can keep an eye on what triggers the location to update. With the status bar icon on, you can check and investigate closely how and when a certain service is updating. I found the Find my iPhone location feature updates like crazy.

System customization also updates in the background constantly ( if you turn it off, Dark Mode/ Appearance will still be able to work in sunset/sunrise mode, night mode however will work only when you put it on a custom schedule, and optimized battery charging will not work (even the option itself in the battery menu is enabled) if you have Significant Location and/or System Customization disabled).

  • Put Bluetooth into standby so it stops searching for new devices (Toggle it via Control Center so the icon becomes white.)

  • Turn off 'Ask to Join Networks' and set 'Auto-join Hotspot' to Never in Wi-Fi settings to stop the device from constantly checking for sources, notifying you and trying to connect to other routers.

I don't mention any of those things like turning off Background App refresh, dimming your display etc as those can be found in literary every 'iPhone battery savings' video or article.

It is clear that the issue can be pinpointed to the cellular modem, which can only be put into completely pause if there is no SIM card in the device. Airplane mode alone does not seem to fix the issue fully nor does turning off Cellular data help much if anything.

Up until yesterday (January 27, 2021) my iPhone 12 Pro battery has been as good or better than my old iPhone X. I've had 5G turned off, that is, I've been using "standard data mode" since about the 2nd or 3rd day that I've had the phone.

Yesterday, while not using it any differently than usual, I noticed it was down to about 60% around noon. I checked and it had fully charged overnight, so this was definitely our of the ordinary. So, I recharged it to 100% and within 5 or 6 hours, after virtually not using it other than running normal items in the background, it was back down to about 65%. What's going on???

Further to my previous comment. 6hrs SOT is you use continuously. If you use sporadically, you won’t even get to close to 6hrs. This thing drains like crazy after the initial 100%-99%. If you use it once every 10mins, it loses 1% percentage even if you use it for 10 secs, especially if you trigger the LTE modem. So SOT takes a sharp dip. This phones are like this . I asked many people wherever I go who own the 12 series. They all say battery isn’t great but most of them will tell you, hey this is a phone. For the other stuff get an iPad. And believe it or not that makes up the majority of apple’s customers.

Hi, there aren’t people with 0%. Apple iPhones have this strange feature that when you charge eg to 84 % it takes forever to get to 83 % but then draining resumes at a normal or fast pace. Those who are claiming that have 0 % battery drain, are charging the phone, unplugging it and then you using that as reference. To get a clear picture, charge it, use it until it loses 1 percent then use that as reference to measure overnight drain

I have had this issue the past 2 nights and I haven’t a clue why, I charged my iPhone 12 mini to 70% went to bed woke up and it was on 20% I couldn’t get my head around why this was the case then i charged it to 80% watched one video in bed on YouTube then went sleep woke up and my phone was on 20% again, I updated my phone to 14.4 2 days ago and then this happened on 2 nights, I phone my network provider today and they said turn off bluetooth and location services and monitor it over the weekend, surely I shouldn’t have to do this as this as never happened before and why should my phone be draining 60% battery whilst I’m asleep, not happy at all with this, it needs sorting. I see a lot of people are having this issue, such a shame.

You might want to refresh your knowledge about charging lithium batteries. Our batteries are the most happy between roughly 30 and 80 %. With the lower 30% zone, the zone were you want to avoid the most being in if you can. Letting it discharge below 5% is not doing any good, not extending its capacity and actually proven to accelerate wear on batteries.

I am spending a lot of time at home these days and I can be a bit of a battery freak....I even have an app that notifies me when my cellphone is charging through 80%, that’s when I unplug my phone.

I also use a 5 watt Apple charger to reduce heat when charging.

When the lockdowns are done, I’ll most likely be a little less careful, but will try to follow these good guidelines to preserve my battery.

Wow, thats great! What is Normal use from your side? Can you please share a screenshot from Screen On for the weekend in order to get better overview (as normal could be 2,3,5 and even >6 hours per day for someone.

I get about 1,5 days with 12 pro max from 98% to 23-4%., avg 4h SOT per day. Today I tested my old 8+ fully charged to 100% at 09;35am and now 14;15 is at 90% with 2 hours screen on, which is a lot of usage for that period of time and the battery is really impressive. (however, i should mention that the battery has been replaced in 2020 (August).

but its a pity that my brand new 12pro max is exactly the same in terms of battery performance as the 8+. Maybe the bigger screen, oled display and new software drain much more even though it should be optimized to the max. Also the 8+ on idle does not drain a s**t. Nothing, nada, 0% for 15+hrs.

i usually turn off WIFI, mobile data and Bluetooth over night, but with WIFI left on battery still dropped 3% overnight which is acceptable .

i usually only enable mobile data if away from home and not somewhere with free WIFI.

I probably am a light user, i dont use phone for watching videos or similar

apple support lady has got back to me and i have said she can close the case

i asked for any information about what was fixed in IOS 14.4

i just expected the battery to be as good as my old iphone 6

I had the iPhone XR and battery last the whole day, even with a lot of emails, phone calls, social media, messages... however my new iPhone 12 Pro battery doesn’t last even half of the day. I fully charged every night, but at 2 pm is at the 25%. I have to charge it again. I’m really not happy with that and also some problems with the speaker, when I use it during phone calls sometimes people don’t hear me. I already sold my old phone otherwise I will get back to it.
