iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

After a couple days of experimenting.

Let me give you scenarios/examples with no regard to any other settings other than those mentioned being turned on or off.

iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 14.3

SIM card installed, WiFi on, Cellular On, Bluetooth in Standby (Turned off in CC to disable new connections, but still enabled)

Battery drops between 15 and 30% over an eight hour time frame while not being in use. (This was the case for a couple days, until I realized something was clearly wrong)

SIM card installed, WiFi off, Cellular off, Bluetooth standby same as before

Battery drops around 10% over the same time frame (Better, but still not satisfying)

Now get this!

SIM card taken out, Wifi on, Cellular off, Bluetooth same as before, I also turned Airplane Mode on for the sake of it

Draining between 1 and 3% , over the span of 8 hours.

I know, it seems absolutely silly to use an iPhone without a SIM card, but as long as this bug is not fixed taking out the Sim card might be your best option to prevent your battery from draining over night. Or you just simply keep it on a charger. Keeping the SIM and at least turning off WiFi and cellular or putting the device into airplane mode should make the battery drain a little less too.

Some other things you might want to switch off, if only to test for a couple days to see if battery life improves and slows the drain. Keep in mind, you can disable everything temporarily and don't have to worry about anything breaking. If something needs a certain thing enabled, iOS will most likely give you a prompt anyways. You can go back and enable everything again, but until a version of iOS 14.3.x or 14.4 is released that addresses the those kind of issues, it's the best and to be frank, the only thing you can do.

  • Location Services > System Services. Be bold and turn off EVERYTHING. Toggle the status bar icon (the switch on the very bottom) so when you slowly enable them one by one again, you can keep an eye on what triggers the location to update. With the status bar icon on, you can check and investigate closely how and when a certain service is updating. I found the Find my iPhone location feature updates like crazy.

System customization also updates in the background constantly ( if you turn it off, Dark Mode/ Appearance will still be able to work in sunset/sunrise mode, night mode however will work only when you put it on a custom schedule, and optimized battery charging will not work (even the option itself in the battery menu is enabled) if you have Significant Location and/or System Customization disabled).

  • Put Bluetooth into standby so it stops searching for new devices (Toggle it via Control Center so the icon becomes white.)

  • Turn off 'Ask to Join Networks' and set 'Auto-join Hotspot' to Never in Wi-Fi settings to stop the device from constantly checking for sources, notifying you and trying to connect to other routers.

I don't mention any of those things like turning off Background App refresh, dimming your display etc as those can be found in literary every 'iPhone battery savings' video or article.

It is clear that the issue can be pinpointed to the cellular modem, which can only be put into completely pause if there is no SIM card in the device. Airplane mode alone does not seem to fix the issue fully nor does turning off Cellular data help much if anything.

Well, in my case all the big energy spenders have been shut down (you know, the background refreshes, notifications, Siri, email push stuff, the lot). I also promise the AC is off, the windows are closed and the trunk is empty. Still, 25% of my "fuel" miraculously vanishes overnight. And that is after 14.4 - before it used to be 65%. But the funniest of it all is that this all started at a given moment, it was not there at the very beginning. I had something of about a month initially when my iPhone 12 was spending the same as my old iPhone X - about 2% - 3% overnight. And that was with the AC on full blast.

I am not 100% sure, but the drain issue might have appeared at the same time when I added the second SIM card (eSIM).

I have experienced this problem two times this week. Last Saturday night I left my iPhone 12 with a charge close to 50%. By Sunday morning it drained to 14%. I moved to iOS 14.4 expecting that it wold help solve the issue. For my surprise, yesterday night I left my phone with a charge level of 55% and it today it was drained to 14%. My phone is barely 3 months old so I was not expecting to experience this problem. When I go to sleep I disable WiFi, Location and Bluetooth. I close all the apps and I also set the battery save mode on. I hope Apple gives us a quick response.

Some nights I lose 20-30% in my sleep. Last two nights went dead.. 97% charge at 1015 and dead by morning. The almost full charge all day because it was charging most of the day. Chart shows no activity all night. I was not in airplane mode (in case of a call) and maybe that is unrecorded activity. Still, by going to zero at night my brick isnt even good as an alarm. Is it possible its just a flawed battery?

Hello! As you know? Maybe not? Our phones are getting smarter! Battery is not! What I suggest is turn on your offload apps! Turn your phone off to let your battery deheat! And do not use cheap accessories you can by at Turkey Hill or any convenience store. If you’re paying $1000 for fun why would you buy a cheap accessory that trains your battery I know this from experience Belkin was one of them but now Apple Watch them so another upgraded FYI if you get a general or we’re not always up for the Apple iPhone symbols then it means it’s approved by Apple if you’re on a budget totally get it I understand I’m a budget to! I’ve got O2 SIM card with full strength signal which drains my battery like crazy in idle mode with nothing running in background. EE has been solid for me with 1 bar reception. I’m sorry, but I don’t buy into weak signal crap anymore after experiencing the opposite myself. Oh and my iPhone 8 didn’t care about signal strength at all 🤷🏻‍♂️

I recently enabled sleep tracking again, that might be the reason. I’ll keep an eye on it for a while

My iPhone 12Pro battery was lasting 2-3 days until the last software update 14.4. Now it's not fully charging after being charged overnight with everything shut down and no background refresh on. It's draining to 50% by noon and 10% by 5pm. Ive added nothing new and not using any more than before.

Something's up here. (Reminds me of when my iPhone 7 battery wouldn't completely charge/drained quick and Apple replaced batteries for free as their "programming" had encouraged slow performance. Or so I read.)

I just made more adjustments as recommended here and will shut off my 12 tonight while charging. We'll see...

In reference to you saying your phone doesn't charge fully. Does the charging stop and the curve levels out at around 80%? If so, that is no defect, that is optimized battery charging doing its thing.

Your phone might just pick up a routine from you just now and maybe it does not have it figured out yet, or maybe you got up earlier that usual? Its supposed to wait on a charge level of 80 until an hour you wake up and finish charging before you are about to use your phone. This I machine learning and its still only a machine that can't predict abnormalities (like waking up an hour earlier than usual for example). You can toggle this feature off in battery settings. Although some would probably recommend leaving it turned on.

I noticed that too. Part of the problem is Apple making certain 3rd party charging equipment less effective. Since the Waze/Spotify or other music a draining problem for phone, I’ve started running those apps through iPad when driving. Tedious but keeps pressure off iPhone battery, which of course keeps draining anyway even when just decorating the passenger seat.

Hey guys,

After all the firmware and carrier updates, I am so confused that I don't know what is normal or not. I don't know if battery life sucks just because Apple failed with the iPhone 12 or if it can still be safe by fixing the bug.

I have an iPhone 12, background app refresh OFF, location services OFF, 4G, brightness set to half, IOS 14.4.1, modem firmware 1.42.03, and network provider EE 45.0.

I have only managed to get 2-3% idle drain overnight one night. The rest of them is around 10%. Below there is a couple of screenshots and I would like your opinion about them.

The first screenshot is for a 24 hour period. From 100% to 56% and 2 hours and 30 minutes Screen On.

The second screenshot is for a period of 36 hours (Continuation from the previous screenshot). From 100% to 46%

I have read comments from people who are heavy users using their iPhone for two days. So, I don't know if I am still experiencing battery performance due to apple's bug with the new modem or if my expectations were too high about battery life and this is what it is.

To be honest, before buying the new iPhone, I checked some websites where they run tests, and the iPhone 12 battery life was around 9-10 hours of continuous use.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Thanks

Hi Willwill_p,

I hope you have more luck than me.

My iPhone has been twice in the repair center. The first one they returned as they could not replicate the issue. The second time they change the battery. The problem persists all the time.

Once I knew Apple stores were open for a genius bar appointment, I gave it a go. However, the final result was the same, they said they don't see anything wrong with it and it is normal behavior.

When I asked the girl if she was aware of people complaining about the same problem she said no. She defended iPhone 12 was the newest iPhone on the market and everybody is super happy with it. When I showed her this thread and all of us complaining about the same problem, she just played silly. I was so frustrated that I just left...

I have the same problem as the rest of you. I have been in contact with Apple like 10 times. They have replaced the battery and i have tried a lot of silly suggestions like removing apps like facebook and Instagram, restart it, restart it with iTunes. I have change sim-card and tried with a new Apple id. Nothing works.

Today they told me that it was nothing wrong with my phone and there was nothing more they could do. It is obvius a problem and they just protend that it is not.

This is a comparation between my phone and a 3 year old iPhone 8.
