iPhone 12 battery draining fast

Hi all,

Trying to work out if I have a defective unit I need to send back or if there's a wider issue here. The iPhone 12 Pro is advertised as having a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro so I expected to have slightly reduced battery life (which is fine as 11 Pro was excellent).

However I'm noticing that the iPhone 12 Pro is draining when idle with almost no background activity at a rate of 4% which is much faster than my previous iPhone 11 Pro, and to be honest a faster idle drain than I can actually remember from a new iPhone. First instinct was to disable Mobile data to see if it was a 5G thing, but I actually don't see any real difference from doing that (which makes sense as I've been on Wifi 98% of the time since I got it).

No matter what I try, it seems to be going down oddly quick. Not to an useable level or anything world ending, but I guess its sort of suspicious. I check the battery report, and it's not showing any real culprit, just a rapid decline for no clear reason.

If anyone can share their idle battery with either 12 or 12 Pro I'd really appreciate it.

After a couple days of experimenting.

Let me give you scenarios/examples with no regard to any other settings other than those mentioned being turned on or off.

iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 14.3

SIM card installed, WiFi on, Cellular On, Bluetooth in Standby (Turned off in CC to disable new connections, but still enabled)

Battery drops between 15 and 30% over an eight hour time frame while not being in use. (This was the case for a couple days, until I realized something was clearly wrong)

SIM card installed, WiFi off, Cellular off, Bluetooth standby same as before

Battery drops around 10% over the same time frame (Better, but still not satisfying)

Now get this!

SIM card taken out, Wifi on, Cellular off, Bluetooth same as before, I also turned Airplane Mode on for the sake of it

Draining between 1 and 3% , over the span of 8 hours.

I know, it seems absolutely silly to use an iPhone without a SIM card, but as long as this bug is not fixed taking out the Sim card might be your best option to prevent your battery from draining over night. Or you just simply keep it on a charger. Keeping the SIM and at least turning off WiFi and cellular or putting the device into airplane mode should make the battery drain a little less too.

Some other things you might want to switch off, if only to test for a couple days to see if battery life improves and slows the drain. Keep in mind, you can disable everything temporarily and don't have to worry about anything breaking. If something needs a certain thing enabled, iOS will most likely give you a prompt anyways. You can go back and enable everything again, but until a version of iOS 14.3.x or 14.4 is released that addresses the those kind of issues, it's the best and to be frank, the only thing you can do.

  • Location Services > System Services. Be bold and turn off EVERYTHING. Toggle the status bar icon (the switch on the very bottom) so when you slowly enable them one by one again, you can keep an eye on what triggers the location to update. With the status bar icon on, you can check and investigate closely how and when a certain service is updating. I found the Find my iPhone location feature updates like crazy.

System customization also updates in the background constantly ( if you turn it off, Dark Mode/ Appearance will still be able to work in sunset/sunrise mode, night mode however will work only when you put it on a custom schedule, and optimized battery charging will not work (even the option itself in the battery menu is enabled) if you have Significant Location and/or System Customization disabled).

  • Put Bluetooth into standby so it stops searching for new devices (Toggle it via Control Center so the icon becomes white.)

  • Turn off 'Ask to Join Networks' and set 'Auto-join Hotspot' to Never in Wi-Fi settings to stop the device from constantly checking for sources, notifying you and trying to connect to other routers.

I don't mention any of those things like turning off Background App refresh, dimming your display etc as those can be found in literary every 'iPhone battery savings' video or article.

It is clear that the issue can be pinpointed to the cellular modem, which can only be put into completely pause if there is no SIM card in the device. Airplane mode alone does not seem to fix the issue fully nor does turning off Cellular data help much if anything.

apparently, some users in the US are also experiencing inconsistent battery performance which is what I’m experiencing right now. I talked to my cousin from NYC and he told me there were times when he would lose 20% battery after a 10-minute call but there were times the battery wouldn’t lose any juice after browsing the web or social media and this is same case with his wife’s. In my case, I’m no longer losing massive battery overnight as it’s now ranging between 3-10% after 12 hours but it has been very inconsistent. There were times I’d only lose 1% after 4 hours during daytime but there were times I’d lose 5% in less than an hour.

Exactly I have the same issue with my 12 Pro from the day 1. I notified it when the battery was at 22% at around 10 pm, and it was completely switched off when I checked my phone early morning at 6 am.

Apple support ran diagnostic test and found no issues with the device and battery.

Service Center told me to reset the phone. I reset my 12 Pro, and restored the backup.

I tested with low power mode on before going to bed at night, with WiFi off, location services off, and I even changed the old SIM and inserted a new SIM. Finally Nothing improved the battery drain.

It drains battery in the same speed with or without low power mode. The phone’s battery drain is almost 2% to 3% per hour without doing anything, which accounts to 14% (2% x 7 hours) overnight.

Here is the screenshot of battery graph with, and without low power mode.

For sure, but he is unfortunately gone :(

Here is the result of the last night, really better than usual but it is still not normal to loose "so much" battery by night.

Especially knowing that my battery currently has 200 mAh more than the design capacity, so approx. 5% more, which means that it virtually goes from 105% to 92% in 6 hours.

I am suffering from the same issue. My iPhone 12 pro max 128 battery is draining very fast. I spoke so many times with Apple care. And in the end they make test on battery using wifi. And they said it’s ok. But it is not. At all. Really I am very disappointed to buy this phone. With such amount of money. At least we deserve a good quality not a phone with draining battery

Dec 15, 2020 1:18 AM in response to Master26A

over the course of 6 hours I lost 13% overnight, iOS 14.3, connected to WiFi, no background tasks. This is the most ridiculous drain I’ve ever experienced on a new phone. No way can this phone live up to the usage time Apple claims. It appears there is no fix and must be a fault with the new modem. It would be lovely for Apple to actually address this issue.

I am running out of patience.

Now we have to do everything to get more public attention for the issue and put pressure on Apple to act.

We have to report to the press and online portals so that more articles appear about it.

The consumer protection agency can be informed that a defective device is on the market and the manufacturer stubbornly refuses to admit the problem.

If something does not happen within a very short time, and by that I mean a month at the most, I will return the device and buy a mobile phone from another manufacturer.

Please all join in !

Annoy Apple with the problem: by e-mail, on the hotline and, if possible, in the Apple Stores.

Don't be fobbed off with the statement that it's normal.

Spread the word about the problem on all possible channels!

Hello all,

it seems like this is a general problem from apple.

I'm a iphone 12 mini user and i have the same issue here.

Last night i've charged the phone to 94% and when i woke up after 6 hours it was already 80% . For sure this is not normal, even with updated ios 14.3 it's not working.

My last phone was Samsung galaxy s10 and there is not such a problem like that.

I hope they will fix it.

Really like this iphone mini.

Replacement iPhone 12 Pro Max

Night 6 Selected 4G, manually selected O2, connected to home wifi, mobile data off, background refresh off, low power mode on

15-12-20 22:00 battery 92%

16-12–20 09:09 battery 75%

Putting aside the battery issues, everything else is good. The hardware is ok I think, so won’t be returning, it’s such a pain to swap over and migrate banking apps etc. Looks like 14.3 probably won’t make any difference to battery situation for me, but not making it worse. Will update today.

Of course it is not the network, it is the device or its software/firmware ...

Almost everyone here has seen a difference between its previous iPhone and its 12, most of us have restored a backup so settings are the same and network is the same as people haven't changed their home place ...

The only difference in the equation is the device itself, so if the result is different ... it is due to the device and not to customer use or settings.

So, first impressions from 100% battery level to now are good. Phone has been on the desk this whole morning, syncing 2 mails accounts and connected to WIFI plus 2 SIMS operational with the local Belgium provider Proximus.

Since my goal is to have a phone that lasts until I go to bed and that fulfill my needs (being a light user), I think I'm in the good track. Would be interesting to know from other people having Proximus if they noticed the same behavior.

I have to say I find it rather disheartening when people on some specific networks, namely EE and Sky Mobile are informing that their battery drain is either fixed or was never even an issue. Meanwhile Vodafone UK here...14.3...exactly the same drain as 14.2.1...exactly the same drain as 14.2...and exactly the same drain as 14.1...why? I also run Vodafone UK on 11 Pro Max and had no issues on ANY of the previously mentioned iOS versions (including iOS 14.3). I also have a cellular iPad on the 3 network with NO BATTERY DRAIN issues (although that DID have battery drain on iOS 14.1 but that was fixed on 14.2).

Meanwhile Vodafone UK on 12 Pro Max...constant drain...even on iOS 14.3. My device is also locked to Vodafone so I can't TRY another SIM just to see if it is the carrier at fault here. What's more, I tried to return it today but they had the cheek to tell me I'm past my returns window and all they can do is offer me yet another exchange (I've had 3 already).

Exchange isn't going to fix a god **** thing. Meanwhile I am paying £68 a month for this ****!
