In the past, I would buy a new iPhone at the Verizon store. When I walked out of the Verizon store my new iPhone used the same phone number as my old iPhone, it worked perfectly with my existing/old mobile number. I would return home, and restore the new iPhone from the backup of my old iPhone I made on my Mac. (I don't use the cloud.)

If I purchase an iPhone 12 online, how does the carrier (Verizon) put my old phone number into the new iPhone 12?

Yes. Basically, when you order online, you will be given the choice to select your cellular provider, as well as, retaining your current phone number. When the phone arrives, it will already be activated and you just need to run through the new setup process. That process will provide you with the option to copy your old phone's data to the new phone.

FWIW. I have always ordered & upgraded my iPhones from the Apple online store. In my case I use AT&T as my cellular provider, but it should be the same with Verizon. In all cases the new phone arrives activated with the same phone number as the phone comes with a physical SIM card. The old phone still works during this transition period, but I just use it long enough to both transfer & verify the transferred data to the new phone. Then remove the old phone's SIM card, and finally, restore it to factory settings so I can use Apple's Trade-in process to send it back to Apple.

It's really sad that the machines have taken over. I learned that I CANNOT place an order for an iPhone 12 on Apple's website. This is due to the fact that like millions of other Americans my Verizon bill is mailed to a USPS post office box. The ONLY solution offered on the website was to change my Verizon billing address to a physical street address, which I cannot do.

So, I telephoned Apple and they were not too helpful UNTIL, I said the magic phrase "I guess I will buy a Samsung phone". Then they took the order completely over the telephone. The only thing is it will not be pre-configured for Verizon. Once I receive the phone I will then have to take it inside of a Verizon store to get the iPhone activated.

Thank you to everyone that tried to help me.

So if the new iPhone is already activated doesn't that mean that my old phone will stop working before I receive the new phone. In other words, if the phone is activated at the time it is shipped doesn't that shut my old phone down from the Verizon network? I guess I don't completely understand what "activated" means. Does activated mean that the iPhone will work and you can make a phone call with it? Two iPhones cannot have the same working phone number? You see, when I would do this in person everything happened within a few minutes.
