Unable to login to Google only in iOS Safari

I have an iPhone SE (2nd generation), iOS version 14.1.

I have not been able to login to any Google accounts using iOS Safari. I can load https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/ without problem. The problem is that when I input my email and click "Next", the page will get stuck at loading and will not proceed to password input page.

It doesn't matter what email I input, or whether or not it is an valid email. The page gets stuck when it starts loading.

What I tried to solve this:

  • Clear all website data and history.
  • Clear all cookies.
  • Use private mode.
  • Reset all network settings.
  • Reset all settings.
  • Erase all content and settings.
  • Add Google account with other Google apps which pops up a Safari instance.
  • Add Google account with Mail, Contacts, and Calendar in Settings.

None of the above works.

What works:

  • Use Google Chrome browser.
  • Use Microsoft Edge browser.

I do not have a Mac to debug the problem using Web Inspector.

I have searched the web for similar issues, but none of the results match my case as the other results are either unable to load the page at all or unable to sign in properly. What's different about my current problem is that I cannot even get past the email input screen.

Please help. Thank you.

Hi all,

I figured out how to correct the issue on my iPhone 11 - I hope this is a universal fix for all iOS devices!

I’ve attached images and video of how I fixed this on my iPhone, along with written steps below:

iPhone -

Go to Settings/Safari/Advanced/Experimental Features/requestIdleCallback (it’s at the bottom of the experimental features list).

Uncheck (move the button from green to gray or ‘off’) ‘requestIdleCallback’, power down and then power on your device/iPhone and you should be good to go.

Launch Safari and try to login to Google.

If you still have issues -

Log out of your accounts in Mail or Accounts

Shut down and restart and triple check to make sure ‘requestIdleCallback’ didn’t turn itself back on. Also if you have multiple devices on the same Apple account, make sure they don’t have requestIdleCallback turned on. iCloud accounts sync almost everything so it’s good to make sure all devices are given the same instructions.

Open Safari and login to Google. If it works go ahead and login to your accounts again.

If you’re still having difficulties:

Reset iOS device

Clear Safari cookies

Make sure all your apps are fully closed

If you own a Mac or different Apple device, try to login with that device. This may help narrow down the issue.

If it doesn’t work let me/us know.

Hi, thanks for the information. I tried searching this issue and it seems there are no information on this out there and there seems to be nowhere to ask Google about this problem.

I stumbled on this similar question in Google Ads, https://support.google.com/google-ads/thread/50274846?hl=en&msgid=50276734, the product expert just kinda put the blame on Safari and straight up suggests downloading Chrome and ditch Safari.

Strangely, using some other iPhones with iOS 14.1 that I have access to don't seem to have this issue and they can log in/out without problem.

Hi there,

This is a dilemma I haven’t come across yet.

  1. Apple won’t be able to help you. They aren’t paid to help you or me. Sorry, but it’s better to know the truth so you can move on and figure it out yourself.
  2. Toggling cellular/WiFi/etc only resets the connection to your cell provider or your IP address to whatever WiFi you’re using.
  3. iCloud doesn’t have anything to do with it, nor does Google: this is something in the settings that isn’t allowing your device to behave as expected.

Have You Tried

  • Delete all Google apps from your phone and from Settings

  • Sign out of all of your Google accounts:

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. On a desktop computer, log in to Gmail and scroll down to the bottom of your inbox.
  2. You should see tiny print that says “Last account activity.” Click the “Details” button right below it.
  3. Press the “sign out all other web sessions” button to remotely log out of Gmail from computers in other locations. You can also view a list of devices that have signed into your Gmail account recently underneath this button.

  • Make sure the original steps to fix this issue have been taken: on your device go to Settings/Safari/Advanced/Experimental Features/requestidleCallback (as previously described) and make sure it’s turned off. Just to be sure and possibly rule-out Experimental Features as the issue: turn off all experimental features: scroll through to check that all the boxes/switches are grey -off- and not green -on-.
  • Does your cell provider have an ‘issue’ with Apple or Google and do they actually support your device and your area?
  • When you restart your device what are the steps you’re taking in setting it up again?
  • Does your cell provider have a cell tower or system update code you can call? (I.E.: Verizon has a 3 digit code you call from your phone whenever cell or can’t-call-out issues pop-up.)
  • What browser are you using on your device to connect with/search Google?
  • If you create a new iTunes account and login with that account after you reset your device, do you have the same issues?

After days and hours I found the answer. If you go to your Safari settings, scroll all the way down to “Experimental Features”, then go down to the bottom to - “RequestidleCallback”- and deactivate the button from green to gray. Then close it and reboot your phone! Wow- thank to whomever suggested it on Apple help forum!I am exhausted now. I spent days , hours and trips to my carrier trying to figure this out !

I finally figured it out!! I use PIA (Private Internet Access) VPN. When the applications transferred to the new iPad Mini 6, it set PIA to always turn on the VPN, even though I had never used that setting before. I could turn off the VPN on the main settings page, but in the process of adding the Gmail account, it would automatically turn it back on and wouldn't complete.

I changed the setting in the PIA app, and it added the Gmail account with no issues.

I'm a happy camper now! 😊
