Playing back Dolby Vision/HDR10 content on iPhone 11

I recently bought an iPhone 11 and I’m looking for a way to natively playback HDR content (like sample content from Dolby’s website) on my phone. Especially after seeing that the latest iOS 14.1 update said it added support for playing back 10-bit HDR on devices starting from the iPhone 8 and up.

Additionally, the youtube app also does not have an option for viewing HDR videos in hdr in the quality settings.

Hello berbro,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

Based on what you mentioned, you want to play HDR content on your iPhone 11. There are three requirements when playing content that includes 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos. Your device being capable is one, and the content must be created with these features encoded. If you are able to play the content on your iPhone, you would need to locate content with HDR encoding.

This is not a setting you can use to toggle on for any media you play. It has to be capable content. The last requirement is an app or player that supports rendering the content. You'll normally see what content is encoded for these features. The Apple TV app can play content in its library with these features if the media supports it.

"Here's what you need to watch the highest-quality video available

  • Video content with a high-quality version that you purchased or rented.
  • A device capable of playing high-quality video content:
  • See Mac models that support HDR video.
  • Refer to the tech specs for your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV to check if your device can play 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision videos.
  • The latest versions of iOS or iPadOS, macOS, or tvOS.
  • An Internet connection fast enough to watch high-quality content."

This information is found here: Find and watch movies with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos.

Best wishes!
