Just bought and received after 6 weeks of delay, an iPad Pro 12.9” 2020...and seems to work well except for an annoying little gray dot that appears every so often in the upper left hand corner and I don’t know if I should be bothered by it or if it is sign that something ominous is down the road.

The grey dot that you describe is very likely the “mouse cursor” - this usually only being seen when you are actually using a mouse with your iPad.
There is bug (first introduced in iPadOS13 - and carried forward to iPadOS 14.1) that causes the mouse cursor to appear on rare occasion when not using a mouse. Speaking of personal experience, it appears to be entirely benign. It should disappear of its own accord - but may randomly reappear.
