How do I add multiple series to a scatter plot in Numbers?

In the attached screen shot, I want to create a second independent series for the "B" items on the same plot. (And C, D, ... etc.) Following the instructions I can find, I can only add them to the existing series, I can't add an independent series. What am I missing? I see workarounds by creating additional columns, that won't work in this case -- I need all x values in one column, all Y in another (so I can sort on any of the three columns). Thanks!

It really wants to do things by column, with one series per column (or set of X-Y columns) but you can still do it. What I did was this:

"Edit Data References"
Click on the blue circle and turn off "share X values"
For the second series, select an area of the chart that is in the correct rows but the wrong columns. This will create the second series.
Drag the selection area to the left where the data for the second series really is.

If you sort the table, the rows used for the two series will stay in place and whatever gets sorted into them becomes the new data for each series.
