I have 3 disk images

Hi all! I don't know why but I noticed a few days ago that I have 3 disk images in disk utility on my MacBook Pro 16".

Searching online, I have found that in Catalina is normal to have 2 images, one for the OS and one for the data, but I have one more. I also read that despite the fact there are 2 separate disk images in Catalina, they shouldn't both appear on the desktop, but this happens in my case, as you can see from the images below.

Anyone knows why this happened and how to solve it? Should I reset my computer?

Thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

Catalina has 2 volumes.

You have an extra volume due to some user error reinstalling or some such.

Luckily you can simply delete the extra data volume.

2 Macintosh HD - Data

from Disk Utility.app you can see the mount point

One will be mounted at /System/Volumes/Data this is the one you want to keep

The other will be mounted at /Volumes and you can simple use the “ - “ to delete it.

here is an example of a properly formatted drive:

Ok, I simply deleted that disk image as you guys told me. I didn't know what that was even because I had not seen that image before. Yes a new install of OS has been done a few months ago due to a problem, but it was done at the Genius Bar from an operator so I didn't think that it could be an error during the process.

Anyway, now it's gone so thank you very much for your really fast replies guys, I really appreciate it.

It was not done correctly at the genius bar, it was the easy way out— but no lasting issue really.

Good computing ale_f_91 !

All child Volumes share the space with the Container in Catalina and get re-appropriated to the Container's available space. Reboot if necessary for a fresh look.
