Replace printer icon

I have three printers. The icons for 2 of the printers look like a photo of each printer. The third printer is an old HP LaserJet 6Pn. The icon for that printer does not look anything like the actual device. Is it possible to change that icon?

As with all things it must be possible, but it might be a royal pain. The following may or may not be helpful.

Generally speaking printer icons are buried within the PPDs for that printer, which you can peruse at

/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/

Find the PPD for that printer, which is most likely stored as a gzip archive. Expand and open that archive, which may be a generic text file that you can open with your favorite text editor.

Find a line beginning with *APPrinterIconPath

That will be the path to yet another file containing all the icons for that particular printer. Copy it so you can find that file. Close the PPD file so you don't mess it up, then open the file containing those icons.

Edit at your own risk. Don't do anything without a backup. Be advised different printer manufacturers do things different ways, so as I wrote the above may not be applicable to your old LaserJet.

If you need a picture this one might resemble it
