I, as well as several friends and family, have noticed a problem recently where some images sent via messages do not preview. Instead, a box shows up with a file indicated. You can click on it and it opens the photo, but can’t see the photo in the message chain.
What is causing this? It’s a recent issue, maybe since iOS14?

Are you currently optimizing the storage on your iPhone with iCloud Photos? You can check out this article to Manage your photo and video storage. If you're optimizing the photo storage, it's possible the images are waiting to be downloaded.
Does the issue happen on Wi-Fi as well as on cellular data? Is this happening with a specific contact or in all message threads?

The photos don’t download when I click them. I can open it, but it still doesn’t appear in the message feed. I’ve tried with the optimization both on and off.
This is happening in multiple message threads. On WiFi or cellular as well.
