Cropping of contact photo won't stay

On iOS 14.0 and 14.1 -- I'm trying to set new photos for my contacts. I choose a photo from my camera roll, then pinch to zoom and choose the cropping I want. I press Done, Done, Done, and the contact shows the new, correctly cropped, photo for a few seconds, but then the network activity icon spins and a few seconds later the photo reverts to the UNCROPPED version of that photo.

I have my contacts synced to GMail, but not to iCloud.

I just updated the GMail app and that didn't help.

Is this an iOS issue?

BTW, there's a workaround---crop the photo using the Photos app first, and then just use that photo for the contact photo. Not ideal, but putting it out there for future people encountering this problem.
