iPad 'Cannot verify server identity' error

How do I fix this extremely annoying error message? Sending and receiving mail does not seem to be affected, but starting yesterday for no reason this message keepspopping up. I’ve rebooted to no avail.

I found a simple fix for this issue on my phone. If you have the same settings as I do, it might work for you, too.

Settings—->Passwords & Accounts

—->Choose the offending (Hotmail/Outlook/Live, etc) account

—>Account (email address)—>under Outgoing Mail Server, click on SMTP. If your settings look like mine below, I clicked ‘OFF’ the Primary Server smtp-mail.outlook.com....leaving smtp.live.com ‘ON’.

I don’t know why this worked, as I didn’t change the actual offending Incoming Mail Server, but my phone fetched my mail just fine after I did this. Maybe it’s because the Incoming and Outgoing server names no longer match?

I hope this helps someone else. I really didn’t want to go through the whole ‘delete account’ process!

This same “Cannot Verify Server Identity” issue has started happening for me since at least November 20, but the error popping up is for “google.calendar.com” instead of Microsoft. When I click on Details, it cites “captive portal.Nokia.com” as being “Not Trusted.” Are others now experiencing this regarding Google accounts? I’m also confused about what role Nokia plays here because I have no Nokia accounts. Any insight would be very appreciated. Many thanks.

Finally on page 13 someone has the same issue as me (almost). I don't use Outlook, I use gmail on my iPhone 7+. I too have been getting the same annoying pop ups but they are saying imap.gmail.com and when hitting the detail button I get the same Nokia portal crap as the other user. I too have no clue what Nokia has to do with this nor have I ever had any Nokia product or account. This is across the board and not tied to just Microsoft mail.

Also, after that started I had problems logging into other apps.. just couple. But their system would say that I didn’t have account there and when I put my info in it would say that my info already being used.. can’t be sure that had anything to do with the glitch but two separate situations with same results happend after this glitch l

Same problem as everyone else. Has been happening since Oct. 30. Message pops up constantly. I tried fiddling with the date/time setting, as I saw elsewhere and it would be fixed but only for a little while. I reset network settings, bupkis. Deleted my email accounts and reinstalled them and something I noticed about the outlook.com account when it reinstalled is there was no SSL able to be checked (ie: Advanced Settings: S/MIME; Sign (everything greyed out) and Encrypt by Default (greyed out also). So I guess the security certificate is still a problem with Microsoft? Does this mean all my emails can be hacked now? Ugg. I don't think Apple monitors this community but I hope someone comes up with a solution quick. My phone is unusable at this point.

For all of you who think it is fixed by deleted and re-adding your outlook.com account, I don't think that is a solution. It might resolve the pop-up notice temporarily but the S/MIME aren't available. I don't want a pop, I want imap. There is clearly some problem between Apple and the Microsoft security certificate but I don't know how to fix that. But if you look under Advanced settings you will see that it looks different than it did before you deleted it and reinstalled it.
