System takes up more than half my storage space!

My system files take up more than half of the storage on my mac, so I'm continuously needing to delete files just to work. Very frustrating. I knew I'd need quite a bit of storage because I work on graphics files so I purchased a 500GB Mac (pretty roomy), but had no idea that that would actually leave me with less than 200MB of actual storage.

Is there a way to remove some of the system files or is that locked in place by my Mac to clear up space?

Details:

Total storage = 500GB

System = 259GB

Apps = 32GB

Photos & Apps = 12GB

Documents = 146GB

MacBook Pro 13”, macOS 10.14

Try these steps

Reset SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Reset NVAM https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Reboot holding Shift to enter Safe Mode https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262. It's a longer boot while macOS does some maintenance under the hood. It'll remove old cache like old update files, etc. that can help you recover some storage space.

Reboot normally and check it got any better.
