Image Capture doesn't have permission

Starting with the most recent update I am unable to doubleclick-open images in Image Capture:

Is this a bug? Any way to fix it? Because it pretty much make the application useless.

I can't follow the given instructions because there is no Finder folder for the images, it is on iPhone.

iPhone 11, iOS 14

Thanks, I understand now. If I change the "Import to" destination to Downloads, I get the same thing. Same if I choose Desktop, or Documents. The only destinations that work are Pictures and Movies.

That has to be a bug.

Try changing the "Import to" destination to Pictures, even though that's not a destination you or I would prefer to use. Double-clicking shows a full size image—as well as importing it to Pictures, and as I wrote that's less than ideal if all I want to to is look at the full size image. I have to manually delete the imported image.

If you two-finger tap one of those thumbnails in Image Capture, does a Reveal in Finder selection appear?

No, but I think I fixed it. I deleted the file

com.apple.Image_Capture.plist

and also the one in the ByHost folder and now it is back to normal. I suspect what happened is that I recently got a new iPhone that was named the same as the old iPhone. I would guess that because Image capture could't find the old iPhone it errored. i.e. programming bug.

Ok thanks. Beats me why it's not working, though if I double-click a thumbnail it opens Preview, not QuickView. Might be irrelevant.

Click the tiny icon at the lower left of the Image Capture window. Mine happens to be set to "No application". Try changing yours; perhaps it will reset some obscure setting. Along the same line of thought try changing the "Import to:" selection to something other than Pictures. Choose Desktop, for example. Perhaps your chosen pathname is messed up. If you were attempt to download to some protected location that won't work, but I understand the error occurs even before getting to that point.

What's worse is that double-clicking a thumbnail image automatically downloads that image to ~/Pictures which I really would prefer not to do. If you two-finger tap one of those thumbnails in Image Capture, does a Reveal in Finder selection appear?

It could be a bug but some more investigation is needed.

One rudimentary explanation would be if those images don't reside in a subfolder of Home, so you have to first determine where those files reside. For example if I open Image Capture it gives me options for connected scanners, with Pictures as its default storage location. That location should be ok.

You can't. I'm confused because the Image Capture app is designed to work on the Mac. Using Image Capture with an iPhone would exceed my expectations. How to scan documents on your iPhone is all I would expect to do with an iPhone.

Start from the beginning and tell me what you're doing with your devices, and I'll do the same with mine. Maybe I'll come up with an idea; no promises.

There is no "Get Info" for Image Capture items, cmd-i has no effect. When I doubleclick the icon it does import the image to the "Downloads" folder, while simultaneously showing the error message that it can't be opened. All I really want to do is see a larger preview of the image.

I changed permissions of the "Downloads" folder to "everyone read and write" but it has no effect. Once the images are on the filesystem the error message is irrelevant.

I don't know what's wrong.

OUCH! You figured it out but I don't like it. This problem started recently, like a few months ago. Before then the Downloads folder behaved like the Pictures folder does now. I looked at the Permissions and ACL, but they are identical in both. This sure seems like a bug.

Also, I used to doubleclick a picture for a preview only, but now it imports and there is no option to not import. Seems like both started with the same update.

To answer your previous question, the Contextual Menu offers to Reveal in Finder only for pictures already imported. For unimported pictures that item is greyed out. This feature also appeared with a recent update. Before then you couldn't know if a picture had already been imported.

It occurs to me these problems might have started when I got the iPhone 11 about a month ago.
