iOS 14.1 Email Notification Issues (All Mail Apps)

Note: Please read the entire post before replying with solutions.

Ever since iOS 14.1 came out I have not been receiving push notifications from any mail app on my iPhone. The apps include Boxer, Gmail, Outlook and the native Mail app (may affect others too but this is all the Apps I have tried). This includes all types of notifications; Lock Screen, Banner and Badge... not one of these types of notifications is working on any mail app I've tested.

It acts as if all the mail apps are set to Fetch mail rather than Push but they are not. When any mail app is opened, mail appears shortly after.

It appears it is not just me. Looking at reviews of these apps listed above in the App Store it appears others are having the same issues.

I've narrowed it down that this started AFTER updating to iOS 14.1

Troubleshooting done already:

  • Settings on all Apps are set correctly.
  • All Apps have Background App Refresh turned on
  • All Apps are up to date
  • All Apps have Notifications turned on.

My Thoughts:

  • This may have something to do with the current bugs related to default apps.
  • It is a iOS system issues, not an individual app issue but not 100% sure.

My Background:

  • ACMT
  • iOS Qualification
  • Many other Apple Qualifications

Notes:

  • The device I have listed is iPhone XS Max which is experiencing this issue but I have since upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro (not an option on the communities discussions board yet).
  • My wife's phone experiences the same issues. (iPhone XS Max - iOS 14.1)

Check Mail Fetch and Notification settings

By default, Fetch New Data settings are based on what's provided by your email service. If Push isn't available as a setting, your account will default to Fetch.

It’s seems only iCloud, Outlook.com, Exchange accounts use Push, and Google, Yahoo, AOL or accounts added as IMAP and POP, will rely on Fetch.

With iOS 11 and later, and iPadOS, Automatically is set by default. Your device will fetch new data in the background only when your device is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

Go to Settings > Mail > Fetch New Data and change fetch schedule to ‘Every 15 Minutes’.
