How can I migrate Two MacBooks via USB-C and not via WiFi?

I am migrating two MacBook Pro’s. Both running same latest software. They will only connect via WiFi and not via usb-c bridge. Transfer limit 20mb/s. Going to take 22hrs.

I have tried to disable WiFi and Set Service Order to put thunderbolt at top. Nothing seems to be working.

Transfer your data to your new MacBook Pro - Apple Support explains the various methods. Review the links within that document to determine what will work best for you.

macOS chooses the connection specified in its Network Preferences Service Order: Change the order of the network ports your Mac uses - Apple Support. Rather than adjust it though, if you want to prevent the transfer from using Wi-Fi, then simply turn off Wi-Fi.

thanks John.

  • I had read that article and seen the pro tip and I’ve plugged both machines together - is that all that should need to happen? Because it won’t connect via the usb c.
  • I booted up the new Mac without selecting to transfer files in order to change the service order. Changed it on old Mac too. That didn’t work.
  • turned off WiFi - but that just said no connection found.

what should you need to do for it to use usb - c on migration. Surely it should be automatic? It’s obviously the best method not a “pro-tip”

thanks
