Connecting Walkie-Talkie creates phone call on iPhone

Since updating my iPhone to 14.1 connecting with someone with the Walkie-Talkie feature on my Apple Watch 4 (updated to 7.0.2) causes my phone to create a phone call with them. The entire time I am connected with them in Walkie-Talkie the time on my iPhone X has a green shape around it as though I’m on a phone call. When I tap it, it shows the phone call but immediately hangs up and Walkie-Talkie disconnects from them.

Here’s a video of the problem:

Hello themattknight,

It sounds like you're concerned about the green bubble showing in the status bar when using Walkie-Talkie on your Apple Watch. It can be normal to see this in the status bar when the feature is being used. I am having the exact same issue.

I am on an Apple Watch Series 5 with Watch OS 7.1 and my iPhone 12 Pro on iOS 14.2.

The solution Jeff_W is talking about is not the solution.

When in a walkie Talkie conversation your iPhone will display as a FaceTime call. When you are using Walkie Talkie it should be an independent Watch function that does not utilize FaceTime on the iPhone.

I have attempted to disable and enable Walkie Talkie. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the app.

Next I will attempt to sign out of FaceTime on my iPhone, reboot my watch and phone and sign back in.

I’ll let you know if that fixes it.

You are correct on the fundamentals of how the Apple Watch connects to the iPhone. However this is not how Walkie Talkie is supposed to function.

The Walkie Talkie function is independent of the iPhone.

The issue arises when it appears the iPhone is on a FaceTime call. When pressing the indicator it will state the “FaceTime Call is disconnected” and immediately terminate the Walkie Talkie conversation.

This issue is not occurring on my wife’s watch and iPhone.
