Apple does not have a 2020 model of 16” MacBook Pro. Any model purchased will be the 2019 model, even though it may have been manufactured yesterday.
It's a little like model-years of cars. At this writing the 16-in MacBook Pro is the "2019 MacBook Pro", indicating the date that design was FIRST shipped.
If you order one now, they will build you one now. What will be shipped will identify itself as 2019 MacBook Pro. When it arrives, Its serial number can be decoded to indicate the week it was built, and it will indicate that it was physically built last week.
It appears so: Buy 16-inch MacBook Pro - Apple
I get the metaphor but I'm sure that if someone walked into an auto dealership and bought a 2020 model and after getting home found that it was the model from the year before, they would not be thrilled.
At some point I will be seeling this laptop, then it will appear to be a year older than it may be.
How do I decode the serial number to see when it was built?
And back to my earlier question, is Apple building any MacBook Pros that carry a 2020 mark or am I to assume they'll go an entire year without a marked 2020 model?
Appreciate the clarification on the method of naming the model as supposed the actuall build year.
There was an earlier mention that the serial number can be decoded to find actual build date, how is this done?
Thanks
This web site, developed and maintained by a used Mac Reseller, usually can show you when your Mac was built and many other details about it based on its serial number:

That's precisly what I did on September 25th, 2020, ordered a new 16' MacBook Pro online.
I recieved the computer on October 5th, 2020.
I had to go into the About this Mac dialog yesterday to answer an OS version question for some software support. That's when I found out that my 'new' MacBook Pro was made in 2019.
Apparently, Apple is selling nearly year old computers as brand new.
At this point, until I contact them, I'll assume that shipping me this machine is a mistake

You have a brand new state of the art MacBook Pro built in 2020— it is 16" MBP late 2019 model.
There is no 16" MBP 2020 model.
You have 14 days to return it for a full refund if you are not satisfied with your new mchine.

The designation you see in "about this Mac" is NOT the year of manufacture -- it is the model-year.
for example, Apple sold the Mac Pro late 2013 model, a low dark cylinder.
This model fist shipped on 30 December 2013, almost the last day of that year
It was available for sale in some form or another until December of 2019.
It was ALWAYS sold as "Mac Pro late 2013"
