See frame at the beginning of a trim-to-audio?

I don't know what this technique is called.

I have edited audio below.

The video clip on the left matches up with it.

Now I need to adjust the start frame at the edit point to match up with the audio.

Trimming doesn't work because there's no video after the end of the clip on the right.

Adjusting the start of the clip on the right works, except the timeline doesn't live update. That requires repeated playback around the edit, and is inefficient.

Storylines behave differently from connected clips. If you ripple the either side of the edit you should get a two-up display in the viewer, showing the end of the outgoing shot and the beginning of the incoming shot that you're trimming. This happens when clips are in a storyline. Not sure what you expect to happen.

The website isn't allowing me to post screenshots.

The issue is not that the Viewer doesn't live-update. The issue is that the Viewer doesn't provide feedback when it's not updating fast enough to be usable. And it's not obvious, visually, or based on fans kicking in (they don't), that the issue is performance-related.

Switching to optimized media, and, if necessary, a proxy, is the solution for this.

I'm not clean from your screenshot what's on the primary storyline. Is it the video of the audio? Also, not clear what you're trying to do to the incoming clip on the right. You want to shorten the head, but you don't want to leave a gap? Is that right? If the video is on the primary storyline, activate the Trim tool with T and drag the right side of the edit point to ripple the edit.

I don't know what a storyline is yet. Is it important to learn before I move forward? (All I know at the moment about what I have is that I've got a video track, and an audio track, recorded separately. They're shown in that image.)

As it is, both the Select and Trim tools turn into the same icon to the right of the edit point, and do what I described above. The end result is achievable; it just takes too long because of the usability problem I mentioned.

I can get a different result, with T, if I move the cursor farther to the right, but I can't drag to the left, like I need to, because Final Cut doesn't permit this operation if there's no video after the endpoint of a clip.

What is your mac model? What drive? What are the project settings.

In normal circumstances, there is no reason to have the Viewer not updating in real time - and especially when all you have are one audio and one video clip.

Either there is something very wrong with your mac, or a problem with communication. The kind of adjustments you are speaking of are something quite simple for a mac to handle.
