In the contacts app, the phone symbol does not always work

Hi. I have two iPhones one a first gen SE and a 6S. Both are on latest version of ios.

In the phone app, when you press the contacts, and then enter a contact, there are 5 symbols going across including message, call, video/facetime, mail and pay.

On my iphone SE, the call/phone symbol is press-able and doing so will dial the number. On my iPhone 6S, which has the same exact contacts shared by iCloud, the call symbol does not press and call. It does nothing. I'm trying to figure out why.

A friend also has an SE and 6S and on both of his phone the call/phone symbol does not dial out when pressed.

Ok, I just updated all 4 phones from iOS 14.1 to iOS 14.2. I think 14.2 must have just been released.

After updating the iPhones this issue appears to have been fixed since now all phones work correctly. They all dial out when pressing the "call" symbol. I'll update my bug report. Thanks!

That Is Normal:

With just one phone number, seeing “Mobile” and “Phone” is fine, if you have just a mobile number for that contact. So, no worries there.

As for Two Numbers:

If there were two numbers, and you saw “Mobile” and “Phone”, then this would all seem to be a bug of sorts.

So, Report All of this to Apple:

Do your Part: Let Apple know about what is going on here. The more feedback Apple receives on this, the more they will know what is going on, and what needs to be fixed

To Submit your Feedback:

Hi thank you.

I could have worded that better.

It's phone dependent. So I have an iPhone SE and an iPhone 6S. On my iPhone SE it works. On my iPhone 6S it doesn't work.

A friend also has an iPhone SE and 6S that I help him with. On both of his iPhones, the SE and 6S, it does not work.

So only on my iPhone SE does it work.

I did try a force restart already - didn't help - and I went through the settings to see if anything is different between my working iPhone SE and the other 3 phones and I didn't notice anything.

Also, i tried deleting and reentering contacts and this did not change the behavior. I should mention i have iCloud on for contacts so any change made on one phone or in the iCloud affects both of my iPhones.

One thing I noticed is if I Hold press on the call symbol on the iPhone SE that works - one phone number will pop up. And of course if I just press the call symbol the phone number will dial like normal.

On the iPhones that don't work if i hold press the call symbol - two phone numbers pop up - sometimes it is just one number with two versions like a mobile version and "phone" version. But, there is only one phone number on the contact, usually listed a mobile or main contact. It's almost like it is not recognizing how many phone contacts there are (just one) and has some kind of cache issue showing older ways the number was entered for example that is interfering.

One other odd thing I noticed is that on my iPhone 6S where it doesn't work.... if I have a contact set as a favorite (i have 6 numbers set like that), the call symbol works.

By that I mean if i go to that favorite contact in my contacts or if I press info (i) on the favorited contact from the favorite section on the phone app and press the call symbol it works on the iPhone 6s. But if the contact is not favorited like most are not it does not work (but does in iPhone SE).

You are welcome.
