Magic Trackpad 2 clicks very erratically

My Magic Trackpad 2 has become virtually unusable - it clicks by itself when my hand is just resting on it, or clicks many times at once, or doesn't respond to clicks at all. There is no pattern. When plugged in either behaves the same or clicking doesn't work at all.
