iPhone 12 Clicking/Grinding Noise when Charging

Hey guys, I just got the iPhone 12 on release day. A little more than a week into owning the phone, I noticed that my phone started randomly having grinding/clicking noises when I charge the phone. It's not normal operation and is abnormally kind of loud. I am currently using the official 20W charger from Apple (got it from Apple.com) and the USB-C wire from the phone's box. When I stop charging the phone, the clicking noise stops. However, when I plug it back in, it resumes and is very annoying. Not sure what is going on (if its defective, normal operation, etc). I might just return the phone within the two week period and get the 12 Mini instead of going through the mess of genius bar. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Actually I got the IPhone mini today and mine is making the same or similar sound (more like a whirring sound)....I also noted there was an audible noise everytime i received a picture message from my daughter on WhatsApp...again it was an audible noise and coincided with each photo sent.... its like you can hear the memory on the unit...or to be more specific like a hardrive noise (actually that might be so specific but hopefully you get that it sounds mechanical...I'm thinking the magnets perhaps interfering with the wireless charger???).

Out of the box I was prompted to update to 14.2.1 so it is running the latest update...have to say I am concerned to leave it charging but I need to get to sleep.

As the phone was set up only 14 hours ago I'm going to go out on a limb and say this isn't a case of reset or restart your device....more either software or hardware issue....as I've never had a phone make these kind of noises....this needs to be addressed urgently.

I ended up returning the 12, and got another 12. The second 12 stopped making the clicking/grinding charging noise. However, another issue arose where there was a low brightness purple tint screen defect on my second 12.

I ended up returning the second 12 after a week and got the 12 mini on release day. Other than the slightly lower battery life (which isn’t a huge deal) and the Lock Screen issue which was fixed in the 14.2.1 update for me, I love this phone. It’s the perfect size for me.

I suggest you return this phone and get a refund from the Apple store. Your charging issue sounds similar to mine. After returning the old one, buy a 12 mini again and you should hopefully be fine. Your issue sounds like a factory hardware defect. Don’t even bother exchanging it. Return it and get another one! Good luck
