With the iPhone-X, can I setup Face ID while wearing a mask? A friend of mine with the new iPhone 12 says he can Face ID wearing a mask. However, when I try to set up an Alternative Appearance on my iPhone-X while wearing a mask, I get "Face Obstructed"; "Try removing anything that may be covering your face." My iPhone-X is up to date (iOS 14.1), but it will not allow Face ID setup, while I'm wearing a mask. Will a future update remedy this?

Unless your friend has a mask that looks exactly like the bottom of his face and is contoured to his face he is lying to you. No update can remedy this as the algorithm needs the whole nose and bottom of the face to properly recognize you.
No, you can't. Your friend is not telling you the truth. The True Depth Camera which records your face cannot record a face with a mask on. This is why in a recent update, Apple reset the phone to go immediately to your Passcode when the phone sees you with a mask on.
You are correct. You cannot set up Face ID with an obstructed face (with the mask). I cannot answer your question about future updates and Face ID w/ Mask remedies because only Apple knows the answer to that question.
