What do I need to do if I lost my iphone, tried Find my iphone but couldn't login since you need to login to your icloud in order to use Find my iphone. Tried the reset password but they want to send message to my lost phone.

First - contact your service provider. If you have an account with them and can prove your identity they might be able to transfer your number onto another sim which you can then use to receive the message on another phone.
Second - have a look here and see if you can use any of the recovery methods.
