Here's a small sample. I found an article where people talked about it happening with an i but seems no one has ever fixed it. neither wiping/resetting or getting a new ios or iphone works...
Any ideas?

It sounds as though you're having issues with the built-in keyboard typing a number instead of the desired lettering. To ensure the best support is provided does it appear to happen when words are replaced using predictive text, or as you type each letter? Have you verified that the iOS is up to date as outlined in the following article?
Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Also, do you notice if this issue occurs when using any specific apps, or all apps and functions? If the issue is in a specific app, what app are you having issues with? If the issue occurs in all apps and functions we recommend resetting the keyboard dictionary. This can be done in Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
