Thanks very much for the reply, good feeling to find users who care to help!
As to my problem: I succeeded by pure luck, as follows. I have an iPhoto Library (on a Mac OS 10.9) with ca. 33000 pictures. . copied it to an external harddisk. (Took several hours). Then I connected the harddisk to my other iMac (OS 13).
There I openend Photos, holding down the alt-key, then choosing the iPhoto library on the harddisk. Took again several hours, looked good at first..., then the mac hung up. Tried it once more, same 'result', no success. (That's when I wrote the note). The next day I copied the old iPhoto Library once more, to another external harddisk, repeating the process a described - and surprise - it worked !
Good luck and thanks, Hans
What version of iPhoto created the library?
How is the external HD formatted?
iPhoto 8.1.2
HD (both used) MacOS Extended Journaled
Thanks for your help
You're up and running so that's very good. I guess persistence pays.

Please explain what you mean by "real iPhoto Library" as opposed to the iPhoto Library you migrated?
What do you mean by "refuses"? Did you get a message? Post a screenshot of the message you got.
What libraries do you currently have, both iPhoto and Photos? Can you post a screenshot of them in your Pictures folder?
