I wonder how to tell TM to save my USB drive
System Preferences> Time Machine> Options the Exclusion list will open.
Add Disks, Volumes, Folders or Files you do not want to back up to the list.
Remove Disks, Volumes, Folder or Files you do want to be backed up.

If the drive's format is one Time Machine can back up, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, click on Options, and remove it from the exclusion list. Otherwise, reformat it or copy your files to the internal drive.
