When I hold "D" to run a hardware test, I am just taken to Internet Recovery. I have a mid 2012 Retina MacBook Pro and am running OSx 10.15.7.

I am having a problem with my left fan in that it runs at top power all the time; it even will run for short stints while the computer is closed & asleep. I've dusted/cleaned the fan, checked the CPU, all that.

I can't explain it because I just tried iAHT on that model Mac and it worked. It boots Internet Recovery with its "spinning globe" icon, but then AHT loads and works as it always has.

Confirm you press and hold both option and D keys (two fingers) while you start the Mac with a third finger. Release those two fingers when you see the "spinning globe" icon with its "Starting Internet Recovery" caption.

If that doesn't work I have no explanation and can only speculate as to the cause, which won't help you.
