Only receiving 1/2 SMS texts

I started using my iPhone 12 last week, and recently have had issues receiving SMS messages. I only found out when I was comparing messages with fellow group chat member. I was missing approximately half the messages from various people. I tried created a new group chat and took my SIM card in and out which helped temporarily. A day later, it started again. Has anyone else had this issue? Was it a hardware or carrier issue?
