Can't manage to add custom sounds for notification alerts.
I managed to get them into the iPhone in the "Music" app where they are in a Playlist.
How do I add them as a notification alert? E.g. the sound played as a ringtone.

Short answer, the way you did it you can't. If they are in the Music app and a playlist, they won't be available for use as a tone. It has to be a specific file format for it to appear in the tones category in settings on the device. And even then, syncing them through iTunes is tough these days since there isn't a tones category any longer. You need to get them to a file type of m4r and when you drag and drop them on the device in the side bar of iTunes they will be synced over.

iTunes is still terrible. I can’t believe that Apple hasn’t fixed such basic usage issues. :-p
