My Facetime app on my ipad keeps crashing and freezing. I have tried to delete and re download to no avail.
Any suggestions?

It's the original Ipad Air and the software version is iOS 12.4.9.

Something could have gone wrong during the latest iOS 12.4.9 update procedure.
I would try to install a fresh copy of iOS. To do this, create a full backup of your iPad (1), then restore it to factory settings and, in the end, set it up as new (2).
When done, restore data from your previously made backup (3).
