I'm using Mojave on my MacBook pro A1278. After about 100mb into the backup, Time Machine freezes. I'm backing up to an external hard drive. Disk utility and Onyx can't find any issues with Mac HD or back-up HD. Any ideas anyone?

Try making a back up to a different / new drive as a test.
Independent of DU or your Onyx— the drive can still be failing in some manner.

Hey, thanks. I didn't have a spare XHD but I did notice that my Sophos virus kit was reading my OS version as High Sierra, and not Mojave. I reinstalled Sophos, it now reads Mojave, and now the back up works fine.
I'm afraid none of the steps suggested by apple support resolved my problem.
