First, Find out which macOS your Mac is using - Apple Support.

Then determine if you need to update macOS or upgrade macOS for the product you wish to install.

In addition to the need to know what OS version you now have, we cannot effectively advise you regarding any upgrade path without knowing the sub-model of your computer. Upgrade possibilites are completed dependent on sub-model.

You can find your sub-model from "About this Mac" in your Apple menu:
