iPhone 4 signal issue with no bars

I have an iPhone 4 with 4.0.1 iOS and have had a problem with signal strength in general. Specifically though, if I lose the signal totally, the phone starts Searching and once it finds a signal again, the phone will have no bars. So it looks like this:

_ _ _ _ _ AT&T

It will stay just like this until I reboot the phone. I can drive around to locations I know I would ordinarily get 5 bars, but it always stays at 0. Changing the phone to Airplane Mode doesn't resolve the situation. A reboot is the only remedy.

Has anyone else seen this or have any suggestions?

My iPhone 4 will occasionally do this, but it only ever happens in a poor service area right before the service depletes to EDGE and sometimes GPRS. I usually hover between 3 and 5 bars of 3G service. I had the first dropped call I've had since I believe October of last year, today....but again, that was in a poor service area and my hand was covering the antennae which didn't help. But I have had surprisingly exceptional service with my 4 compared to my old 3GS. My dad is the only one in the family who has yet to upgrade his iPhone (still using a 3GS) and I've noticed my signal will be stronger than his sometimes. Have you talked to an AppleCare technician or a Genius at this point?

I had this problem with my phone for over a month. I called AT&T numerous times to express my dissatisfaction. I finally asked to speak to a supervisor who informed me that eight towers in my area were being repaired. He suggested turning 3G off, which I did. I went from no bars searching to five bars. Since I have no need for 3G at home as we have a wireless router, it is a good solution for me. I have tried 3G again in the last week. It does seem a little better but only stays on 2 bars while Edge remains on four or five.

Well, I have a bit of good news, at least on my end since I last replied to this thread. My iPhone 4 is no longer having significant coverage problems or heating up internally. I am able to efficiently make and receive calls the majority of the time unless the coverage is poor in a certain area. I can hear a bit of a rattle inside the phone upon lifting it to my ear...not sure what that is (proximity sensor?) but since the iPhone is functioning as it should, I am reluctant to have it checked out. Sure hope y'all find a fix. The iPhone 4 is a beauty when it finally works well. 🙂

Same issue here!!signal lost to _ _ _ _ _ several times a day and I need to reboot.
A couple of additional points:
- My iPhone 4 worked perfectly in the US with ATT. I moved to Chile with Telefonica and now I get this issue every day.
- Using OS 4.2.1
- My SIM card works perfectly in other phones
Please let me know if you find a workaround!!
