Delete key on Smart Keyboard not deleting mail in iPad mail app

I’m no longer able to delete mail when using the smart folio keyboard when using mail on the iPad. This used to work well and smoothly, but no longer does. have tried disconnecting the keyboard, and restarting the iPad and the mail app, as well as an old hack workaround that used the search bar. None of it works. Is there any way to fix this? The delete key works perfectly fine (including in writing this post).
