Bluetooth headphones connected but not working

I have the iPhone 12 pro. When I try to connect my Bluetooth headphones, it says connected but the headphone icon does not show on the top and no sound will play through the headphones. It will eventually work after having to disconnect and selecting forget device for about 30mins to an hour. I tried connecting different headphones and had the same issue. I also tied connecting these headphones to a different phone (iPhone se and iPhone 7) and they worked fine. I’ve tried restarting my phone, resetting the Bluetooth setting, forgetting the device and reconnecting, resting all setting, resetting network settings, updating the phone...nothing works. Any ideas on how to fix this???

Also note that my Apple Watch and Apple Car Play are connected through Bluetooth and work fine.

Hello Tiffa1321,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with connecting your headphones. Thanks for also providing the troubleshooting you completed.

Since you are using Bluetooth, this setting is probably enabled but please verify one more time that Bluetooth settings are enabled in Settings > Bluetooth.

Then, make sure you are pairing as described in this article: Set up and listen to Bluetooth devices on iPhone - Apple Support

If you can't pair a device, please check the troubleshooting in this help article: If you can't connect a Bluetooth accessory to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Also verify your settings using this help article: Customize headphone audio levels on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Last, while audio is playing, choose the sound output to your bluetooth headphones: Set up and listen to Bluetooth devices on iPhone - Apple Support

"Play audio from iPhone on a Bluetooth audio device

  1. On your iPhone, open an audio app, such as Music, then choose an item to play.
  2. Tap , then choose your Bluetooth device.
  3. While audio is playing, you can change the playback destination from the Lock Screen or Control Center.

The playback destination returns to iPhone if you move the device out of Bluetooth range."

Thanks and have a wonderful day.
