Can you use iMessage through your iPad when you don’t own an iPhone?

.Can you use iMessage through your iPad when you don’t own an iPhone? I just bought an iPad but I don’t own an iPhone. I have family who do, so I was wondering if it’s possible to send iMessages through my iPad?

Sure! But you won't be able to send SMS, that is, the kind of text that requires a sim card, unless your iPad takes one. You'll be able to send messages if you have an activated Apple ID, which is usually the email address you register with apple to download apps from app store or activate FaceTime etc. So as long as you log in to your iPad using your apple ID under Settings and activate the messaging mechanism under Settings>Messages by instructing it to use your apple id to send and receive messages, you should be fine--though you'll be able to send to and receive messages from those who are also using their apple ids. TIP: your Apple-ID enabled messages will appear in blue bubbles, indicating that you're using your apple ID and the internet to send messages and not a sim card (whose messages will appear in a green background). Hope this helps.
