moving iphoto library to external drive

Hello, hoping someone can help. I followed the directions listed on Apple Support to move my iphoto librbary to an external drive. Now all my photos are not in the new photos library; it only dates back to a year ago?? Does it just take a really long time to load them?

thanks in advance

Did you install and run any of the Seagate software that usually comes with their drives? If so uninstall it as it's not needed for the system to manage the drive.

If you want to get a new library with all of the full sized versions of your photos in it on the external HD do the following;

1 - create a new, empty library.

2 - set it to be the System Photo Library.

3 - enable iCloud Library for it.

4 - do not enable "Optimize Mac Storage"

5 - sit back and wait as all of your photos are downloaded full sized into the new library. It can take a while so just leave the Mac on at night, sleep the screen, and let it do its thing.

Please read the following user tip and restate your question/problem in detail

Writing an Effective Apple Support Communities Question - Apple Community

What system and Photos versions are you running?

Are you running a "managed" or "referenced' library?

Do you have iCloud Library enabled? If so do you also have "Optimize Mac Storage" enabled?

How is the external drive formatted? Is it a SSD or rotating disc HD?

Did you move a Photos library to the EHD or was it an iPhoto Library which you then migrate to Photos?
