I received an alert while using Safari that my phone had a virus and all my data had been compromised. It said I needed to download an apple app to remove the virus. I also noticed a time countdown. My question is iPhone prone to viruses and do we need to download a virus protection? Any recommendations?

iOS / iPadOS devices cannot be hacked or infected with Virus / Malware / Spyware if it is updated to latest iOS/iPadOS, unless you have intentionally downloaded spurious softwares or unauthorized apps directly from the internet and installed on your device or/and have Jail Broken.
It (Hacking) also depends on how careful are you in sharing sensitive and valuable information pertaining to your iPhone such as Passcode, Password etc with your friends and family members.

Theres no virus information on iPhone.
But some websites try to frighten users, to get them make things like giving them their password.
If you ever get such a warning again, just ignore it and close the tab.
There are also some Content-Blocking Apps, that are able to blocks some of this false warnings.

Maybe you install the jail break and your iPhone is unsecured and gave a problem with virus
