I have a 2009 iMac and I am trying to connect it to a 2020 iMac through a USB C connector, but the one side doesn't fit. Which USB C connector should I get?

I'm trying to connect my old 2009 iMac to a new iMac through a USB C connector, but the connector that I got has two different ends, and the one end doesn't fit. Did I get the wrong USB C connector and what USB C connector should I get. Or, is the 2009 iMac too old? Help.

There is only one type if USB-C connector.

2009 iMacs don't have USB-C ports. They have regular USB-A ports. So a USB-C cable with a USB-C connector on both sides won't work.

You would need to get a USB-A to USB-C cable:

mophie USB-A Cable with USB-C Connector (1 m) - Apple

But depending on what you are trying to do, this may or may not do what you want. What exactly are you trying to accomplish by connecting them?

The 2009 iMac uses Mini DisplayPort, not Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt adapters and cables may have plugs that fit, but they won't work.

About the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple Support

"This adapter is not compatible with displays that use DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort, such as the Apple LED Cinema Display. Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are not the same as Mini DisplayPort , though the ports have the same shape."
