I HAVE A NEW IMAC AND HAVE A THUNDERBOLT 3 USB-C CABLE. I WANT TO HOOK IT TO AN OLDER IMAC THAT ONLY HAS A USB 2 PORT. WHAT ADAPTER DO I NEED TO HOOK THESE COMPUTERS UP?

You are referring to Target Disk Mode or you can also use file sharing assuming the old computer starts up and runs okay.
Please refer to both https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/transfer-files-mac-computers-target-disk-mode-mchlp1443/mac and also https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/set-up-file-sharing-on-mac-mh17131/mac for advice on how to do both. The cables you are trying to use will not work!
Also, before giving away the old computer please do both yourself and your grandson a favor and prepare it per the directions in What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
