Problem with restore the iPhone “iPhone” to its factory settings.

During the extracting of the software iTunes can recognize the serial number of device, while beginning the process of verifying the software it shows n/a device number. On the screen of the iPhone I see the logo Apple and a long bar without any color filling as during the regular process of restoring software. What is the reason why iTunes loose the serial number of the device during the beginning of verifying the iPhone?
