No iPhone 11 text sound notification near Macbook Pro

I saw that this question was asked before but didn't see a resolution. Since I got a new Macbook Pro when I am near it the sound notification for texts does not go off. It works fine if I'm away the Macbook. I usually get a vibration on my fitbit ionic and if I have notifications turned on for messages on my Macbook I will see the text in top right corner if I'm on my computer. If I'm not I don't know that there's a text. Please advise as this is becoming really annoying. I have missed several texts due to this.

I have tried shutting off message notifications in both ipad and macbook pro and it stops the notifications from coming through on them but I still get no sound notification on my iphone. If I look at it the banners show the text but if I don't keep checking the phone I never know if there was a text. Shouldn't there be an option to decide where you get sound notifications? Many times the Macbook is just open and I'm not even near it. Still no sound for texts.

By design, you get notified (sound) of messages on only one device, the active one. So if you’re using your Mac, the notification comes there and not on your phone.

That does not apply to voice calls, where everything ‘rings’ (in my case, that’s often two MacBook Pros, an iPad, my Apple Watch, and my iPhone).
