Message sound notification on I-phone XR

I have read through the previous questions, all of the sound notifications are turned on, and I still only get sound notifications sporadically. The sounds always seem to go off when I am in holding the phone, or sometimes when replies are being sent to me, but not when I am a little farther away. I have missed many messages in a timely fashion because my phone doesn’t go off. The last trick I tried just a few minutes ago was to turn the lock sound off, but don’t know if that will help yet.

iPhone XR, iOS 16

Choir_singer,

When your Apple Watch is paired to your iPhone you will receive notification on your watch or iPhone but not both. Since your iPhone receives notifications when you're using it we recommend taking a closer look at your Apple Watch notification settings: Notifications on your Apple Watch

"If you don't see notifications on your Apple Watch

When your devices disconnect, your notifications go to your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch. To check your connection, swipe up on the watch face to open Control Center. If your devices are disconnected, you might see the red iPhone icon , the red X icon , or the Wi-Fi icon . Try to connect your iPhone and Apple Watch.

When your Apple Watch locks or you turn on Do Not Disturb, your notifications go to your iPhone:

  • When your Apple Watch is locked, the lock icon appears on the watch face.
  • When Do Not Disturb is on, the Do Not Disturb icon appears on the watch face. To turn this feature off, swipe up on the watch face, then tap the Do Not Disturb button ."

Best regards!

Hey there Choir_singer,

It sounds like you're working on getting Notification Sounds for Messages to sound reliably. You've started off with some good troubleshooting steps. Since you mentioned that the sounds work sporadically, let's go over factors that could contribute. If you're using an Apple Watch, Notifications may be going to your watch: Notifications on your Apple Watch.

If that's not the case, let us know if there are any other variables, such as moving from Wi-Fi to cell data. If it works only when you're at home, connected to Wi-Fi, there could be an issue that's related to cellular data. If the behavior started after an update, check for an additional update that may address that: Update your iPhone or iPad.

Take care.

Hey Choir_singer,

Got it. Thanks for the clarification that the audio of the notifications is the issue. We have a few steps we'd like you to check. For one, if you have Bluetooth turned on in Settings > Bluetooth, turn this off and see if the same issue occurs. This will ensure the issue isn't related to audio being routed to a Bluetooth device.

Also, if you change the audio tone to something different, preferably a default sound, do you still not hear it when receiving a notification? The answer to this will help us isolate the issue a little more.

Cheers.

To my knowledge, I get the notifications on the I-pad, the watch and the phone - just no sounds. I don’t know about cellular vs wi-if. Most of my time is spent at home, so Wi-fi connection is predominant. Today, I received a message from someone, and, because it didn’t make a sound, I didn’t see it until over an hour later. If I am holding the phone, most of the time the sound is made. When the message came today, the phone was up on a table, and I was down on the floor working on a project, and it made no sound.

Most of the time, the only Bluetooth device the phone is connected to is the watch, and I need to keep that connection going. When I drive, it’s connected to my car, and when I’m working out, it’s connected to my headphones. But those are all only for relatively short periods of time. I have previously tried changing the sound to another type of tone, but that makes it work maybe only the first time I get a text, then it goes back to sounding sporadically.
