Hp LaserJet 1012 printer drivers no longer available for Mac - help?

Is there anything that can be done before I am forced to buy a new printer. Really don't want to

Just click the download button. It will download a file named "HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.dmg". Double click that, you'll see .pkj icon when it opens. Double click that -- and an installer "Install Hewlett-Packard Print Software." info box will take you from there.

HP asked Apple Apple to inactivate a certificate without realizing doing so would cause them problems.

You can also check System Preferences > Software Updates for a printer update. See the screenshot at the bottom of this article:

Hello,

Yes, I can understand that you do not want to decommission a good printer. Did you at some point try the Gutenprint driver? Also, did you again (during the last couple of days) try the 5.1 printer drivers from HP in order to check whether it contains something of interest? Could this possibly be a driver intended for a somewhat similar but more modern printer (just guessing here)? If necessary, you may have to experiment with drivers for several models. Just as an example, HP's suggested macOS 10.15 download for a LaserJet 1022 is the 5.1 package.

If you feel safer downloading HP drivers driver directly from Apple, I can confirm this does indeed contain the driver for the Laserjet 1012 (I still use mine, too), which I just installed and can also confirm my 1012 is back up and running. On the downside, this installs pretty much ALL HP drivers too (at least as of the date of the download file, 2017) - it's a huge install (almost 1GB).

(Now I need to research how to uninstall all the drivers I just installed that I don't need, but that's another topic.)

Hi,

The latest Mac driver available for download from HP today appears to be for Mac OS 9. This makes the LaserJet 1012 a very interesting printer for owners of old (approx. 1998-2003) Macs.

A third-party Gutenprint driver hp-lj_1012 can per se be found at http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php, but please note the information on the home page about macOS Catalina 10.15 installation problems.

If nothing else works, you may even want to carry out experiments with an older Windows version running in a virtual machine under macOS on your Mac.

Hi Jan,

thank you for your input. But as you noted - the problem seems to be that Mac has deliberately disabled the function to accept this printer with updated OS as well as the driver not being available from HP.

My objection is that this printer works very well and I am loathed to retire it. This in addition to then having to purchase a new one with all the usual ink issues of modern printers.

Im still holding out for a solution.

Apple were happy to take my $3,500 for the MacBook Pro - seems bad business to dictate which printer I must use.

Why did you immediately start making scurrilous accusations about Apple intentionally disabling your now FOURTEEN year old printer? I still have my LaserJet 1022 from the same vintage and it works perfectly well with Catalina 10.15.7. It’s really hard to help someone with that kind of thinking getting in the way. Good luck.

Interesting response - I'm still very pleased with my printer, it works perfectly and it's publicly announced by Apple and HP about their decision not to support drivers for some models of printers.....so its not 'my thinking'. Thousands of people are posting about the same issue with Apple since this update. But thanks for your help, yours is the next model number I will try to solve the problem at least until their decision is altered.
