Draw shape in notes after iPadOS update to 14.2

I recently bought an Apple Pencil 1st gen. I recall when trying it out, drawing a geometric shape that transformed into a uniform shape with straight edges. I have just updated to os 14.2.

having just gone on to learn how to use the pencil with Notes. I now find I cannot draw a regular shape with straight edges as previously.

Am I missing something or have I got it wrong?
